I’ve seen some confusion concerning sales for release week and just wanted to put all this in one post.

All preorders prior to November 13th, and all sales through the November 19th will count towards first week sales numbers. There is no need to cancel your preorder and rebuy on Friday. The only advantage of doing this will be to up the sales on the iTunes charts, but essentially the iTunes chart is a real time calculation of iTunes purchases only and in the end does not hold any bearing on actual chart position (and as we have seen, it’s the only chart that includes pre orders, and Adele isn’t moving from that top stop any time soon).

If you are buying multiple CDs do so in separate transactions just to be safe. The Nielsen reporting bases it on actual album movement but they do it differently for other charts apparently. So if you are buying for friends, ring them up separately

Buying individual tracks now counts towards album sales. Any 10 individual song sales from an album will count towards one album sale. So, if you don’t want to buy the album or you want to encourage people to just buy one song to see if they like it this will still count in the end.

Streaming also counts towards album sales. any 1500 streams of any song from the album will count as one album purchase. If you want to stream If I Could Fly 1500 times, this will count as one album sale. If you want to stream the album 89 times, this will count as one album sale.

So, don’t cancel your preorder. Encourage friends to buy individual songs between November 13th and November 19th if they don’t want to buy the whole album. Go buy everyone you know an album from your local store but annoy the cashier and have them do it separately. And then stream the album when you are on a device that you can. Listen to that instead of listening to your iTunes purchase or CDs you bought for the first week to help drive sales!
